Gender equality is a fundamental human right. The right to be treated equally and not be subject to discrimination or oppression on the grounds of gender is central to the constitutions across European democracies. Equal and fair participation of women and men in political debate and public life is fundamental to democracy. Achieving gender equality, such as in decision-making and political life, is heavily dependent not only on laws and constitutions but also on access to politics, education, the opportunity to express one’s views and the way in which women and men are portrayed and perceived in, and by, the society. The media shape the way people are viewed, having an impact on women’s access to political life, decision-making roles, the exercise of their rights, their careers and societal opportunities.
Among a great international cohort – led by the International Federation of Journalists and the University of Padova, under the AGEMI (Advancing Gender Equality in Media Industries) initiative -, the students at the University of Klagenfurt participated in courses with the objectives of
- Raise awareness of next-generation media professionals about gender inequalities in how women in political and public life are currently framed in news discourse, how to develop more sensitive and less stereotypical reporting and its relevance to democratic development and fundamental principles of access, inclusion, participation, pluralism, and equality;
- Acquire knowledge about the contemporary participation of women in political and public life with a European comparative approach;
- Acquire knowledge and skills on how to develop news content with a gender-responsive approach;
- Acquire transversal skills with a focus on gender-responsive communication practices and the capacity to develop projects around gender and media.
